~Canal Walk~
5th February 2012
Lob Lane Mill, Brierfield
Scroll down for photos and a description of the walk....
Clockhouse Avenue
Fine icy stuff fell out of the sky on Saturday (4th) and left all surfaces covered in ice. At 1100hrs on Sunday the temperature was just above freezing and there was a slow thaw taking place. It's very misty and the walk starts from here.
Marsden Road, Burnley
It's not often you can safely stand in the middle of the road and take a photo. Here the "A" road runs into Burnley and two lines of houses are served by their own lanes, either side of the main road. Crossing the road, we head down Reedley Drive.
The Preston to Colne Line
Here, looking towards Burnley, the nearest station is Brierfield, about 3/4 mile behind me.
Oliver Ings Bridge
Lob Lane Mill, Brierfield
Soon to be occupied as residential units (homes).
Tunstill Mill, Brierfield
I think this one is empty, used to be Smith & Nephew.
It's Bread Jim, But Not As We Know It.....
Canal in Nelson
There's not much in it for those of us who like big landscape views of the countryside.
Robin
A small puddle on the towpath attracted the interest of a few birds. Robin takes his turn as a Coal Tit wanders off.
Sparrow
Whitefield, Nelson
The mist has lifted and dispersed a little, but on the downside, we are now in Nelson.
Bull Home Playing Fields, Barrowford
The towpath continues to Barrowford Locks and Foulridge, we took a path over Pendle Water and under the M65 then across Bull Home playing fields and into Barrowford Park.
Barrowford Park
Walkers: Karen and Me
Time taken: 2hrs 10mins over a distance of about 5.5 miles. Approx. 350ft of descent.
Route: Clockhouse Ave., Hillingdon Road, Reedley Drive, Prairie Fields, Leeds & Liverpool Canal to Barrowford, through the park to Pendle Heritage Centre.
Weather and conditions: Misty and cool, no wind.
Greetings Count: Plenty of canal walkers, funny how some look up and smile, while others don't seem to see you!
Richard's Refreshment Review: Vegetable Broth at Pendle Heritage Centre. Very Good. We are fortunate to have three excellent little cafes close to three good walking areas; these are The Cabin at Barley, Wycoller Cafe and Pendle Heritage Centre, Barrowford.
"Black 5" No. 45305 at Blackburn on Saturday 4th Feb 2012
On Saturday, I went to Blackburn Railway Station to watch the Cumbrian Mountain Express run through the station on the way to Clitheroe, then Hellifield (watering) and then the Settle to Carlisle line.
Try this link to a YouTube video for some footage of the above train further up the line. By a man called Austin, it seems, nowt to do with me.
Take me back to the start ....
