~Hardraw Circular~
9th September 2012
The relatively short drive into North Yorkshire for a walk from Hawes, correction Hardraw, as Hawes was full. It's probably the last day of "summer" in these parts and that is reflected in the numbers in attendance.
Across The Fields
Scroll down for photos and a description of the walk....
Ribblehead Viaduct
On the way, we stop to have a look at Ribblehead Viaduct from the South.
Whernside
Ribblehead Viaduct & Whernside
The two together. In the foreground is a mass of Shake (or Sink) Holes, best seen from the train. I'm loitering, along with a few others; lonely characters stood in fields, on hillsides, all in patient expectation ...
Black 5 No. 45305
Here comes the late running steam-hauled express. "The Waverley" is routed from York to Carlisle.

Steam on The Ribblehead Viaduct
This is more like it. Last week's A4 "Union of South Africa" didn't quite look right. I generally avoid this viaduct for my photos of the trains as they run slowly over the viaduct and those on the other side of the tracks (the better profile) are looking south into a bright sky.
The Cart House Cafe, Hardraw
Hawes was full. So we took a chance on Hardraw and despite a Brass Band Contest taking place behind the pub, there was room to park and a table free at the cafe.
Wensleydale Fields
We join the throng heading across the fields towards Hawes.

Hawes on a Sunday afternoon is not the best time and place to be to appreciate Dales life. I think there should be a limit of "say" 20 motorbikes at a time in small villages like Hawes. Not 100+, discuss....
Karen en route to Appersett
Out of Hawes and across fields to Appersett.
Hardraw
Appersett Viaduct
The route takes us under the disused viaduct, past the village of Appersett and then along the back road to Hardraw.

Parking in Hardraw
Walkers: Karen and Me.
Time taken: 2hrs over a distance of about 4 miles.
Weather and Conditions: Warm and Sunny.
Greetings Count: Busy, apart from the return route which was peaceful.
Richard's Refreshment Review: Fine food and properly served tea in The Cart House, Hardraw. They run a tidy little campsite around the back, I went to have a look and it will do!
