Grassington
For some unknown reason, we have not been to Grassington before. One of life's little mysteries.
~~~
We started by taking lunch in Cobblestones Cafe (right of Bluebell). Many of the houses in Grassington are well presented. It's bright and dry and somewhat more suitable than the day before.
Water Pump |
The Woggins |
By the time we had finished our meal, the sun was out. The pump is restored and runs continually. The Woggins is a narrow passageway behind the main street.
Chamber End Fold
High Lane
Our chosen walk route took us out of Grassington, in a south-easterly direction, on High Lane in the direction of Hebden. Generally a very pleasant walk along the lane and then across fields, just a bit boggy in places.
Elbolton Hill
Elbolton Hill, seen here in front of Burnsall & Thorpe Fell, is one of the Cracoe Reef Knolls. Basically they are carboniferous limestone structures. Very old and worth further reading, if you have the time.
Wise House
Wise House is the ruin further up the slope. The most usunual thing in this photo, after the last ten days, is the blue sky.
Directions |
Hebden |
In Hebden, there is a pub - The Clarendon, a Post Office / Shop and a Tea Room (in the old school). We passed them all and headed down Hebden Gill for the Wharfe.
The Suspension Bridge
We didn't need the bridge, which takes a path to Burnsall as we stayed on the north bank for the path back to Grassington.
River Wharfe |
Dales Way Footpath |
The anglers are directly beneath local power lines and a sign that advises against rod work in the vicinity. Nearest the camera, the chap is possibly texting home with news about supplies for the table. There's plenty to see along the riverbank.
Stepping Stones to Linton
One option is to cross the river and walk past the church before re-crossing for Grassington, but not today.
Black Horse Hotel
Back in Grassington and it's very busy.
Richard's Refreshment Review: Cobblestones Cafe is excellent! And joins the list of "highly recommendeds" on this website. There isn't actually a list, but there will be, one day. The link goes to TripAdvisor and may not be always active.
