Scroll down for photos and a description of the walk....

Foulridge Wharf Colne to Skipton Line
Foulridge Wharf
Old Trackbed

Today's walk in finest East Lancashire started from the car park behind "Cafe Cargo" as seen in the photo on the left. We crossed the old trackbed of the abandoned Colne - Skipton line and headed for Foulridge Hall. The first half of this walk is on "new" territory for both of us.

Leeds Liverpool Canal

Leeds - Liverpool Canal

This view north-east over the canal, shows the waterway at its highest level above sea level - 149m. We will walk for a little over two miles on the west side of the canal before returning along the towpath.

Noyna Hill Daubers Farm

Daubers

Just names on a map, but brought to life by walking boots and a camera!

Farmland

Farmland

This walk through famland crosses many stiles and has us squeezing through some testing "fat man's agonies", if you know what they are.

Wood End Farm Jacob Sheep

Jacob Sheep

Cofusingly, there are two Wood End Farms in this area, this is the "south" one. Rare breed on the right, I wonder what the common breeds think of these celebs?

Unnamed Hill

Innominate Hill

A neat little hill, with rich grassy slopes and a hedge along the top is un-named on the map. At 190m and proudly offering views in all directions, it is deserving of a name.

to Salterforth

To Salterforth

Having crossed many fields and nipped through a garden or two (where the footpaths are not always clear), passed an old quarry now used as a scrapyard, we begin a descent to Salterforth.

Anchor Inn, Salterforth

The Anchor Inn, Salterforth

Another of those, haven't-been-in-for-nearly-30 years pubs. So in we went for light refreshments.

Sheep Hill

Sheep Hill

From the canal towpath, Sheep Hill and Kelbrook are seen beyond the wide open fields.

Canal Bridge

Canal Bridge

The stretch of towpath from Salterforth to Foulridge must be one of the most attractive on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.

Canal barge Canal Activity

Canal Activity

I wonder how useful the little white mark to the right of the centre of the arch is? Do boatsmen really need to know where the centre of the waterway is located?

Foulridge Wharf

Foulridge Wharf

And back to the start, completing a really fine circular walk. My little red car proudly reached 50,000 miles this weekend, not bad for an eleven year old; soon to go into hibernation for the winter.

Walkers: Karen & Me

Route: Foulridge Wharf, Foulridge Hall, Daubers, Un-named Hill, Heather Leigh, Park Close, Salterforth Bridge with The Anchor Inn, Leeds-Liverpool Canal back to Foulridge Wharf.

Refreshments: Soft drinks at The Anchor Inn. Busy and welcomming, many were eating main meals and the "trio of lamb chops" had sold out, must be good!

Time taken: 2 hours 10 minutes over a distance of approx 4.5 miles, including time in the pub.

Weather: Sunny and warm.
