The Start

Well, we're on holiday in the Lakes and we will walk and we will climb fells whatever the weather. The forecast was for rain. It's warm and there is no prospect at all of taking that elusive landscape photo which will hang over the mantlepiece at home.

To Charleton Gill

The plan is to climb Brae Fell from Longlands (village) and then extend the walk to occupy as much time as I like, bearing in mind the dull weather and the fact that there are other things to do apart from lose oneself in the depths of low cloud and murky mist.

Trees Charleton Gill

Some trees find themselves in the landscape and then before long we arrive at Charleton Gill. The ascent of Brae Fell from here was described by Wainwright : "One wearies of the search for anything interesting during this overlong and featureless grassy trudge". The excitement is mounting.

Molly & The Rock

This is precisely as intersting and exciting as it got. I can wholeheartedly recommend that walkers do not use this route unless (a) you live a very thrilling life and need to calm down or (b) you are a long grass and boggy ground enthusiast.

Ah well, let's go and find another fell top....

Little Sca Fell

The top of Little Sca Fell is generally considered to be more interesting than that of its lofty neighbour, Great Sca Fell. And the view is quite good, on a better day.

Great Sca Fell

Great Sca Fell has much to offer, especially so with an asent from Fell Side. But the summit is a little underwhelming, someone has fly-tipped rubble from a building site and it has become a cairn.

A great reward for walkers in these places on days like this is solitude.

Consideration was given to concluding the walk with an up-and-over Longlands Fell wander, but there's only so much excitement one can take in one go, so I decided to head back to the car on low level routes.

Burntod Gill

Trusmadoor

Trusmadoor

The gap between these fells has the interesting name of Trusmadoor.
