~A Lingmoor Hike~

19th May 2023

Lingmoor Yew

F35

On the left is the Lingmoor View...view to the Langdale Pikes and on this fine day we are planning to walk a local circular without hitting any major summits. The peace is interrupted by a squadron of F35's practising their craft over the Lakeland landscape - I think four came over the cottage and made quite a racket.

New Bridge

New Bridge - Great Langdale Beck

We walked down from Fir Garth to "New Bridge" and up the footpath through Baysbrown Campsite. There are some wonderful place and fell names in the Lake District, but more than one bridge has only been offered the most prosaic of names.

I've never pitched my tent in this location, but I can't see much to moan about here. Our cottage is in the trees above the "white" terraced houses. There is no shortcut through the Baysbrown Wood, so we follow the public access route through the woods as far as Sawrey's Wood.

Quarrymans' Route

It's an absolute pleasure to use these ancient tracks, built for a completely different purpose. Getting Molly to look at the camera is almost impossible; Karen has got the hang of it.

Molly Takes a Rest

Walkers must take a sharp left turn at the yew tree and head for the ridge. On the way is an awkward locked gate with missing welded steps. Luckliy Molly could crawl under it. Seemingly the gate will remain locked as there is a rewilding plan on one side of the wall and deer and other nibblers need to be excluded. I'm not sure which side is busy rewilding.

Little Langdale Tarn

We were down there two days ago, a little about that later.

The path down to the valley floor is clear to see and we follow it to join the track which runs between Little Langdale and Chapel Stile.

And so, we walked back to Chapel Stile, a very pleasant 5 mile wander with 1150ft of ascent.

On Wednesday and with Andy still on board we went to Hodge Close Quarry for a walk to Cathedral Cave...
