About Summiteer

~Pendle Hill~

10th August 2010

A simple target is to climb Pendle Hill at least once every month. On paper or screen, that does not appear too difficult, but last year August missed out due mainly to some dire weather. So, it was good to get one under the belt for this August, even though it was not under the most inspiring of skies....

Pendle Hill

Pendle Hill

On my way to the parking spot beyond Barley, I stopped to take a photo as a little sunlight lights up Barley Hill. The header photo, above, has not been Photoshopped, it appears the farmer got his letter spacing wrong.

Pendle Hill

Other Walkers

I went up the steps, what better way to spend the evening than an 800ft ascent before supper? Here I am near the stop of the steep ascent.

Pendle Hill

Low Cloud

The view out towards Buckden Pike. That's a sheep in the foreground.

Pendle Hill

The Stile

An orange glow is the closest thing to a sunset on offer. Maybe 45 minutes or so later, the sun will shine under the cloud, just above the horizon, but I won't be here to find out.

Pendle Hill

The Sheep Family

On the summit plateau, grazers graze and gaze.

Me on top of Pendle Hill

When I set off from the bottom of the steps, two cyclists also set off up the gentler slope of the track. We met again at the top and one of the guys took this photo for me. I returned the compliment:

Julian and Tom

They were heading off towards Ogden Clough, I would take the track back down, completing the shortest route to the summit and back.

Fell Wood

Fell Wood

The view towards Burnley and the top of the track is just in view. That's my way down and within 20 minutes or so, I'll be back at the car.

Walkers: Just Me

Time taken: 57mins over a distance of 2.5 miles.

Route: Shortest route from the roadside near Barley, up the steps on the right and down the track on the left.

Weather and conditions: Rather cloudy and a bit of a breeze on top.

Greetings Count: The lady with the dog and a couple coming the other way. Then the two cyclists on the top and two other walkers near the bottom on the way down.

Richard's Refreshment Review: Not today.
